Helping Students Make Informed Choices for a Global Future
By Puneet Chopra
In recent years, the aspiration to study abroad has grown tremendously among Indian students. Access to global education, international exposure, and better career opportunities have made overseas education an attractive path for many young individuals. However, while the dream of studying abroad is becoming more common, the journey toward achieving it requires careful planning, awareness, and the right guidance.
For many students and their families, choosing the correct course, country, and university can be a complex and overwhelming decision. Over the past fifteen years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with students who aspire to pursue higher education abroad. Through my experiences, I have learned that the most important factor in this journey is not simply ambition, but informed decision-making.
My own academic journey began when I pursued my MBA from Liverpool John Moores University in the United Kingdom. Studying in the UK was an enriching experience that opened my mind to new perspectives on education, culture, and professional development. The academic environment encouraged critical thinking, innovation, and collaboration among students from different parts of the world.
This exposure helped me understand the true value of international education. It is not only about earning a degree but about gaining a global perspective, learning to adapt to new cultures, and developing the confidence to succeed in a competitive international environment.
After completing my MBA, I returned to India and began working with Standard Chartered Bank. My two years in the banking sector provided me with valuable professional experience and helped me understand the importance of discipline, financial planning, and client relationships.
However, during this time, I realized that my real passion lay in guiding students who wished to pursue international education. I understood the challenges students face while navigating the complex process of applications, university selection, and visa procedures. This realization inspired me to transition into the field of study visa consulting.
Over the past 15 years, working as a study visa consultant has been more than just a profession for me—it has been a responsibility toward the aspirations of young students.
Every student has unique ambitions and academic strengths. Unfortunately, many students often choose their study destinations based on trends, social influence, or incomplete information. It is common to see students selecting a country simply because their friends are going there or because it is currently popular among applicants.
However, overseas education should never be based on trends alone. It must be a thoughtful decision that aligns with the student’s academic background, career goals, and personal interests.
One of the most important aspects of my role is helping students identify the right course and country for their future. Different countries offer different advantages. The United Kingdom, for example, is known for its historic universities, research excellence, and shorter postgraduate programs. Countries such as Canada and Australia offer strong opportunities for international students through post-study work options and multicultural environments. European countries are also gaining popularity due to affordable education and growing academic opportunities.
However, there is no single destination that is perfect for everyone. The best choice depends on the student’s academic goals, financial resources, and long-term career plans.
Course selection is equally important. Many students focus only on popular programs without understanding whether those courses match their interests or strengths. A student’s academic success and career satisfaction depend largely on choosing a field that aligns with their abilities and passion.
For example, students from commerce backgrounds may find strong opportunities in fields such as finance, international business, and data analytics. Engineering and science students often benefit from emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy, and advanced engineering programs.
As a consultant, I always encourage students to think about their long-term career vision before making a decision about their course or university.
Another important element in the process is transparency and ethical guidance. In the field of overseas education, it is essential that consultants provide honest advice to students and their families. Students must be made aware of both the opportunities and the challenges associated with studying abroad.
Applying for international education involves financial investment, emotional preparation, and long-term planning. Therefore, students should receive realistic information about admission requirements, visa procedures, and career prospects.
In addition to my professional work, I have always believed in contributing to society through awareness and motivation. Over the years, I have participated in various social activities where I interact with young students and encourage them to pursue higher education and skill development.
India has one of the largest youth populations in the world. Our students possess immense talent and potential, but many of them lack access to proper guidance about global education opportunities. Through counselling sessions, seminars, and community interactions, I try to help students understand the possibilities available to them.
Education has the power to transform not only individual lives but entire communities. Students who gain international exposure often return with broader perspectives, advanced skills, and innovative ideas. They contribute to industries such as technology, healthcare, finance, research, and entrepreneurship.
Many professionals who studied abroad have later returned to India to build successful businesses, contribute to research, or create employment opportunities for others. Their global experience helps bridge the gap between international innovation and local development.
However, students must also remember that studying abroad comes with responsibilities. Living in a foreign country requires adaptability, independence, and resilience. Students must manage their academic workload, finances, and personal well-being while adjusting to a new cultural environment.
Parents also play a crucial role in supporting their children during this journey. Instead of focusing only on the prestige associated with foreign education, families should prioritize selecting the right institution and course that truly benefits the student’s future.
As the demand for international education continues to grow, the role of responsible guidance becomes even more important. Education consultants must act not merely as service providers but as mentors who genuinely care about the success and well-being of their students.
Looking back on my journey over the past fifteen years, I feel deeply satisfied to have helped many students achieve their dreams of studying abroad. Seeing students succeed in their chosen careers and build meaningful lives across the world is one of the greatest rewards of this profession.
My goal moving forward is to continue guiding students with integrity, knowledge, and dedication. I also hope to contribute toward creating greater awareness about the importance of informed decision-making in international education.
To every student who dreams of studying abroad, my advice is simple: dream big, but choose wisely. With the right guidance, careful planning, and determination, international education can open doors to incredible opportunities.
Education has the power to shape the future, and helping students unlock that potential is both a privilege and a responsibility that I carry with pride.
