Arun Rao’s journey into entrepreneurship is unlike that of a conventional garage owner. A graduate in Engineering with an MBA and an Executive MBA in Marketing from IIM Calcutta, he built a successful corporate career with organizations including BCG, Deloitte, ADP, Havells, Mivi, Niloufer and numerous startups, leading marketing and communications initiatives. Yet his lifelong passion remained automobiles.
Over the years, Arun assembled a personal collection of around 12 to 15 rare and enthusiast cars. Maintaining them exposed a major gap in the market. Despite searching across the country, he often encountered poor workmanship, missing original parts, unnecessary repairs and the risks of transporting valuable vehicles between cities. Rather than accepting these challenges, he decided to build the workshop he wished existed.
That vision became Rare Cars India. The workshop was established with carefully selected technicians, world-class infrastructure and a customer-first philosophy focused on quality rather than volume. Today it provides comprehensive mechanical repairs, diagnostics, restoration, bodywork, detailing, paint, electrical repairs, performance upgrades and fabrication. A fully equipped body shop with Italian paint booth and professional lifting equipment enable the team to deliver premium finishes comparable with international standards.
Rare Cars India has earned recognition for taking on projects many workshops avoid. Signature builds include a turbocharged 1995 Honda Civic inspired by the Fast & Furious franchise, bumper to bumper OEM restored Maruti 800, a Mitsubishi Lancer with an Evo IV conversion, the iconic Mercedes-Benz W124, an INRC rally-spec Maruti Baleno powered by the G16B engine, a tuned Honda Civic FD2 with Mugen and carbon-fibre upgrades, a limited-edition Zen Carbon, BMW E39, Mitsubishi FTO and drift-oriented Mercedes-Benz builds. Which he drove in severalnational level drag and autocross events and secured podiums. This illustrates that every vehicle receives meticulous attention regardless of whether it is a collectible classic or a modern performance car.
Beyond technical expertise, the company has cultivated a thriving automotive community. Through its Instagram platforms @rare_cars_india and @arundprao, with a combined following of over 40,000 enthusiasts, the brand shares restoration stories, unique builds and educational content that inspires fellow car lovers across India.
Speaking about his journey, founder Arun Rao says: “Rare Cars India was born out of my own experiences as a collector and motorsports enthusiast. I wanted to create a workshop where enthusiasts could leave their prized vehicles with complete confidence, knowing they would be treated with honesty, skill and respect. They just have to dream it and we’ll build it.”
